Have you pre-ordered a new iPhone XS? To capitalize on the impending mass adoption of augmented reality in iOS, Shopify has just announced the ability to create AR experiences for their e-commerce platform.Augmented reality is what allows you to view virtual objects in a real environment. Now Shopify has enabled a feature to visualize how good that new bike you want is going to look in your driveway. With Apple’s announcement of AR working on millions of iPhones (all the way back to iPhone 6S) alongside the new $1000 iPhones, augmented reality for e-commerce is bound to be a hit this holiday shopping season.
More about the Shopify AR announcement
- Safari claims nearly half of the market share of mobile browsers. Those users will now be able to experience AR right in the browser.
- Jordan Schau, co-founder of fixed gear bicycle shop Pure Cycles has already modeled some products through Shopify AR in anticipation of the launch and says that it “empowers customers to remotely explore every inch, every part, and every angle of their products — an area where traditional product photography has fallen short.”
Just in time for the holidays
This is a game changer for the 600,000 storefronts hosted by Shopify. AR will allow customers to virtually inspect every angle of a product and visualize it in a real environment. This type of interaction strengthens the bonds a brand has with its customers and has the potentially to dramatically increase store engagement and reduce returns.
